Residency

Pursuing postgraduate training is a very important decision in a surgeon's training. This process is time consuming, frustrating, difficult, and expensive-yet very exciting. The training starts a surgeon's personal goal of practice specialization. This period of training needs to be carefully understood because there are many different forms of post-graduate training available.

Because this is a very expensive process, it is financially important to make sound decisions. Applications alone will easily cost $200. Each interview trip costs between $600 and $1000, depending on distance traveled, availability of discount airfares, time available for advance planning, etc.

This information is provided by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons' Committee on Candidate Member Services to allow an overview of the process of selecting, applying for and choosing post-graduate training. It is hoped that this information will be of benefit to residents involved with this process. The committee welcomes any comments about this material.
